Why would the ACC agree to that? That's all the downside of a west coast member without their market for football

This would destroy Stanford's other sports. Too much mid-week long-distance travel.
Becoming an independent for a year may be the better option for Stanford. The ACC would require a long-term commitment for a short-term relationship due to the extensive travel demands.
I get it but Stanford is already all in on this.

In my view, the world of college football would be a better place if the University of Texas at Austin were headed to the Big Ten Conference instead of to the SEC. The SEC already has Texas A&M and A&M does not want to be in the same conference as U Texas.
Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, & SMU don't quite seem to fit the Big Ten profile although TCU is interesting.

The Big 12 Conference does not need or want another Dallas, Texas area school--as it already has TCU & Baylor so SMU has very limited options at this as it desperately wants membership in a Power 4 Conference and is willing to lavishly fund the effort.

Very interesting timing because FSU has until Tuesday of next week to notify the ACC is FSU intends to leave the conference. So we'll see which side is bluffing--may be both or it may be neither.
As much as the ACC would like to add Stanford for the academic prestige, SMU may be the better and wiser choice from a long term perspective.

Only because of a lack of interest by the Big Ten. If the Big Ten wanted to raid the south barely legal entanglements, it would have no problem finding multiple schools.

It’s not the time in the plane as much as the time difference that could affect the players. Once or twice a season is not a big deal. Multiple times can be.
