I suspect the people pushing a magnet school do not want the relief for the nearby community. They still think it is "insurance" to protect others from a move.

I would guess it would be more mechanics, pilots, and air traffic control type functions. I could easily see a plane mechanics type class and even intro classes need for flying smaller planes. I know very little about air traffic control, that might be out of the reach of a HS program. Mechanics in the military tend to be enlisted, so I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility that there are airplane specific classes on engine maintenance that could be taught.

I am not saying I want to see it, just thinking about what it would entail.

I wouldn't mind a second TJ, there is more than enough interest and having one in this part of the County would reduce the commute time for a lot of kids. It isn't going to happen. First, here is a need for a HS to relieve the schools in the Western part of the county. Second, TJ has caused everyone more than enough headaches, they are not going down that path again. And finally, TJ is what it is because of specialized labs and programs that are costly, which I don't see FCPS paying for. T

If there is an aviation program, it will be an academy. Not knowing the full lay out of the KAA campus, I have read that there is the main building and two office buildings. Maybe one of the office buildings is converted into a space for an aviation academy with dedicated classrooms for the program.

I can see some of the School Board being stupid enough to suggest something else for KAA but the majority of the School Board should be able to read the room and realize what buying this building without public discussion and not using it for the Western HS will mean for their political careers.

Anything is possible, but realistically this School Board is not inclined to create more competitive magnet schools. The Democrats don't have the courage to do away with TJ, but they sure as hell don't want to replicate it.

Seems like it would be incredibly foolish given a western HS has been promised for ten years.

What happens is that many Fox Mill families want to go to the new school and little crossfield families want to move. I'd say TOO MANY Fox Mill people (deep in SLHS territory) want to move to the new HS that they think the only way is to advocating Crossfield backfilling them in SLHS. Thanks for the laugh.

FCPS is going to make the adjustment least disruptive possible. They'll move the far western portion of SLHS and Oakton HS into the new high school, that's it. No oakton to SLHS move, no Langley to Herndon HS move. Why stir up a hornet's nest?

If Crossfield resists a move to KAA that might actually give them the cleanest solution for aligning middle schools. Send Oak Hill to Carson and Crossfield to Franklin (send anyone at Franklin from Westfield to Stone.) Then Carson feeds entirely to KAA and Franklin only splits between Chantilly and Oakton. There isn’t enough room at Hughes to take all of Fox Mill, even if they send Herndon AAP students to another center. Carson also continues the Fox Mill Japanese immersion program, which makes them slightly more difficult to decouple.

The only thing that could really change the FARMS rate would be if they moved one of the high FARMS areas out of Coates to an ES in the Herndon pyramid and then onto HMS/HHS. I believe this is one of the scenarios under consideration to relieve crowding at Coates - one of the schools that is really the most overcrowded at FCPS right now. However with the KAA purchase, perhaps new scenarios will be created.

I think the Coates area with the highest FARMS rate already is in Herndon boundary. In addition, I THINK the Extended Stay in that area IS in the Westfield boundary. I have been told that it houses homeless/struggling famillies, but do not know for sure. There is tons of new construction in that area that is not low income--though it is not single family.
