I completely support that idea. I think there should be more than one - one from each high school - present at each school board meeting. Maybe it will remind the school board why they are there and that they should you know actually do something about schools.
To me that is just theater. I'm on a working group with a student rep and they never speak.
Now having a teacher as a school board member, that I can get on board with.
Have you asked them for their opinion? helped them to feel comfortable?
There is an entire student advisory board, just like the budget advisory board, facilities advisory board, instruction advisory board, etc. They are all student council types and get to meet with the school board chair in a private meeting once a month. Students definitely have an opportunity to give input. Plus plenty of students are also on other advisory boards (as mentioned above) -- there were students on the strategic planning committee, for example, and other ongoing advisory boards, and they had to apply/volunteer to be on them so they should be willing to speak up. Students often speak at school board meetings during public comment on issues they care about.
but they don't have a vote or direct representation on the board
neither does any particular interest group
no legislative body works this way, geography is the only way we ever assign representation in a democracy and we don't even do that in Arlington

I wouldn't write off ALL student reps based on your experience with one.
I support both a teacher and a student rep.
I would support a teacher representative as well. I think that would be a good addition - maybe one elementary, one middle, and one high school teacher.

People discuss school board candidates. Get used to it.
Lived in Arlington for 20 something years and have four DCs attend AND some even now teach in APS. This thread goes way beyond discussion of SB candidates.
AEM is slow these days. All the normal people have fled so there’s no one to argue with.
