This is incredibly helpful! Thank you all. Lots of family introspection ahead. We feel incredibly fortunate to be in this position.

Interesting take on the lack of popularity for the hill schools at the K level.

Which schools do you consider the most prized ones?

Np. I’d say Dalton, Trinity and Brearley. HM is TT but not as sought after for K because of location. Many don’t even consider the hill schools at this age. Collegiate is the only boy TT but not as prized the way their girl counterpart is these days.

For the parent deciding between Dalton and Trinity, I think both curriculums will be challenging. Focus on your child, lean Trinity if she is comforted by routines and structure, go Dalton if she is more independent and curious.

Thoughts on PS6 vs. Allen Stevenson?

I wrote this and personally don’t think there’s a simple “most prized” - but many MANY people want those schools. There are able to provide a truly excellent education, so I hope this coveted opportunity works for you!

Would appreciate the group's opinions. The prior posts have been helpful to us - any fresh comments appreciated.

Wowww that’s amazing. Especially with Trinity who tends to like them older. Are you at a very top tier preschool?

Most schools differentiate via reading buddies and reading groups starting in kindergarten.

We're in a similar boat with these two schools, which makes me question how "firm" these communications are (or are they sending them to lots of people)...I'm worried about being left hanging given all of the trading that goes on within a pre-school as well (and the pre-school wanting everyone to be happy). Any advice on how to navigate this to make sure we end up with at least one?

How firm/strong is the feedback you have gotten? We were basically told "your child is in if you tell us you will come" from one of the two schools in question. If you're hearing something like that, I think you are likely set (the school will keep its word). If your feedback is more generalized, along the lines of "we like your kid", I would be wary, especially at Trinity. I have heard more than a few people say that they received good feedback from Trinity, but did not ultimately get in.

I know we would love both, but I have a feeling that Dalton will be the better choice for us. Can you comment on whether Dalton differentiates for math and reading early on? I recall hearing they do for math but not sure of the former.

At Trinity, we heard that differentiation is only for reading - not sure how long this goes on. Perhaps all of elementary?

Is your daughter some sort of math savant? Why do you need her to differentiate for math.

I have heard very good things about math differentiation at Dalton from current parents. They use lab time to work with advanced kids. Trinity uses Bridges so advanced kids tend to mostly enjoy it but they wouldn’t really be working ahead — more like doing fun enrichment stuff on the side. I would also say Dalton is more likely to keep their commitment to admit you. People get bumped to the waitlist at Trinity last minute fairly often. Both are great options so you can’t go wrong. Congrats!
