If a school closes every time 1 person happens to have a close contact they will never be open. That will certainly hurt more kids than being open. They could simply have the close contact person test and follow the DC protocols no need for an entire class or school to shut down.


That’s not what the doctors in Florida are reporting.

+1. "Who made the decision and what was the reasoning?" feels like a super basic question in this situation, from someone trying to understand what happened and have a discussion about whether it's likely to happen again. Where in the world are you getting "vindictive?"

Along the same lines as the person who said not to tell the school irrelevant things, what they have created here is a situation where, when there IS a positive case/suspicion that IS a close-contact and the school really DOES need to know, perhaps that family who does not have backup care or can not afford to take leave without pay will not properly report exposures since they feel the school has such a low threshold and will instantly close. Similarly, a parent or educator who may prefer virtual learning can essentially engineer an entire school closure by reporting irrelevant or exaggerated exposures. It really is a mess. This is why you have policies and FOLLOW them.

I agree some schools are acting really nuts about all this. Our summer camp also closed for the secondary exposure of one person who was not in the end positive.


I hope you got your money back from that camp!


Oh you bet I did, but that did not cover the cost of all the stress and scrambling that ensued!


Not to mention the disappointment for your child! I feel lucky that we get through six weeks of mostly indoor camp without any closures or illness. I’m sorry you had to go through this.

Definitely ask. Back when we left it was in October close to count day when we got into another school. We had pre-paid aftercare through the end of the year and they refunded us then. (granted it was a few years ago)
