Not quite the DMV but only 41% of blacks in Baltimore City are vaccinated. They make up 65% of Baltimore's population. City voted 90+% for Biden. Pretty sure they're not Trump voters.

It's not an equity issue as some of you want to pretend. They just aren't getting vaccinated because they won't get vaccinated. There's no shortage of vaccines anywhere.

I'm not vaccinated. 50 yo white female Democrat. I have medical issues, including severe allergies and an as yet undiagnosed auto immune condition, with risk of blood clots. I am doing the right thing for me, which is holding off on vaccination until I have a handle on my health.

Even if it means killing people you come in contact with when you inevitably catch the virus.

Wow.

You’re sooooooo selfless.

She is doing the right thing. If the only people who were not getting vaccinated had medical reasons, we would be at 99 percent now.

Well, must be all of the Republicans are in those Wards then!😝

Damn, I didn’t realize so many Trumpers in DC!!

I wonder why ever the local press does not highlight these numbers? Whatever to infer from the data?

From the DC website: 71 percent of DC Blacks are not fully vaccinated. Wow.

Medical ethics tells us that we should not put the burden of risk/harm on people unlikely to receive any benefit.

Oh stop. Does CVS stop the vaccine line to pull out the placebo or whatever for Black folks. Insanity. Shame on you for even mentioning in this day abs age. Communities are falling over to get minorities vaccinated with the same, exact vaccine white folks are getting.

Listen to the mayor’s spoke person. Wake up. Many Blacks don’t trust the gov. If you dint get this you’re clueless.

Most of the people refusing vaccination in that community don't even know what Tuskeegee was. As for not trusting the government? The reliance on government services and social support suggests otherwise. Regardless of whether suspicion is driven by ignorance or fear or apathy, it's ridiculous that so many well-intentioned liberal folks think it's fine to indulge one population's refusal (AAs in places like DC) while sanctimoniously denouncing white Trump voters in other places. The mayor and public health official have bent over backwards to get these people vaccinated. If they still refuse, they deserve to be criticized just as much as any other anti-vaxxers at this point.

+1. We all know it’s considered acceptable to heap scorn on one group who won’t get vaccinated and not another.

She looked at the stats and decided her chance of becoming severely ill or dying is very very low. From talking to her, it seems like this isn't a terribly uncommon stance with people she knows (who aren't republican).

I'm a Covid nurse so I have grilled her extensively about her point of view

This is frustrating. The narrative on vaccines has changed because the nature of the virus has changed. Scientists could only report on the effectiveness of vaccines as they pertained to the virus as it existed at the time. The Delta variant is different. Why can't people understand that this is a fluid situation that evolves rapidly, and the "narrative" necessarily will keep changing. Sorry to say, but your sister needs to work on her critical thinking skills.

Yes, it is a fluid situation, which is why government officials (including scientists) need to stop making categorical statements and insisting on censorship of potentially new information. See upthread for definition of science, which is basically never “settled.”

A fluid situation calls for more humility. What is misinformation one minute is accepted wisdom the next and the same happens in reverse. Anyone wanting to step back and see if the story stays straight for more than 2 weeks at a time becomes public enemy #1.

+1. Authority figures try to suppress anyone who doesn’t reinforce whatever their current messaging is but then they change their messaging. They risk their credibility when they do this.

Vaccinated DP. Lots of people with ample critical thinking skills can see that the shifting covid narrative is often caused by reasons other than just science, and it understandably makes them skeptical. First, we were told no masks, and then we were told we must mask. First we were told there was no chance the virus came from a lab, and now scientists admit that it might have. Etc.

+1 It’s absurd. I f@@king hate Trump. But there is no excuse for failing to get the vaccine. I don’t care if you are wearing a MAGA hat or a Kente cloth - get the damn jab.

I do wish public health officials had addressed the rumors and concerns about fertility more directly and that the media had been better about getting it out there. I am fully vaxxed and want as many people to get it as possible, and even I have some unanswered questions about how the vaccine seems to be impacting menstruation that I’d love to have answered before getting my pre-menstrual DD vaccinated. I don’t understand why this hasn’t been addressed more and I think it is causing more vaccine hesitation than people realize.

There was no way that they could address fertility concerns when the vaccine had been used for only a few months. They are waiting to see outcomes, just like you are.
