Anecdotal, but all the unvaccinated people I know, save one, are in their 20s and 30s and it’s a combination of feeling not that vulnerable and fear of the unknown. It’s not rational and largely due to the same youthful stupidity that makes people marry someone ridiculous at 24 or go on a three day bender in Vegas. And they are all white.

I really think some cash incentives or other bribe would help. It reminds me of the way it’s hard to get this demographic to vote. They are self centered and often hard to get to be pro-social or communal. It’s easier to convince older people and people with kids because they more readily see the benefits of collective action.

Why? The government has told multiple lies over the years. At some point, people begin to catch on and not take them seriously.

It's people like Candace Owens who have created this distrust of the vaccine in the Black community. I'm not going to link to her lies, but her story about the Tuskegee experiment is false.

Tuskegee is the story of WITHHOLDING TREATMENT from already-infected Black men, to study how untreated syphilis progressed. By being lied to about the vaccine, they're being treated like those Black men in Tuskegee and denied the best chance to survive Covid.

We literally have a specific population that won't get vaccinated at the same rates as everyone else and we can't even talk about it because it's black people. In the South where it's all Trump supporting white people that refuse to believe the science, we aren't afraid to talk about that. Here in the DC area though, we just can't talk about what's happening. This isn't going to solve anything.

Sure, Southern white people aren’t getting vaccinated. But, the south is full of many black people. 8 of the top 10 states with the highest percentage of black people are in the South. So, low vaccination rates in those states are just as much a result of black peoples’ vaccine hesitancy as they are of white peoples’.

It’s a fact that makes liberals uncomfortable.

There are a lot of religious anti-vax people, who are both black and white. They got the Jesus so they'll be alright.

I'm at this point as well. The only thing that worries me is that if it spreads too quickly, there may not be hospital capacity for emergencies. Rules related to masking and such should ONLY be correlated to hospital capacity IMO. I don't think we should worry about new case numbers but rather only ensure people having emergencies are not sent away due to capacity issues. If that may happen then we need to take measures to reduce the spread. Otherwise, let it spread and at least it will burn itself out faster (until the next variant).

COVID cases make up about 2% of hospitalizations in DC, currently.

The evidence from places like the UK and Israel seems to suggest very strongly that, in a highly vaccinated population, increased case numbers don’t lead to significant increases in hospitalizations or deaths.

I'm AA and the only AA person I know who isn't vaccinated is my 22 year old nephew.

Looks like we’ll be spending our free time (and money) in Virginia.

I keep reading news articles and seeing opinions on DCUM that "african americans are naturally fearful of doctors and hospitals because of historical abuses in the medical system." That's like me saying I'm afraid to visit germany because historically they were nazis. At some point you have to stop hiding behind excuses and develop expectations that adults act like adults and make good decisions. You can't blame your bad decisions on things that happened 50 years ago.

Same. And I have no more patience for the But Tuskegee people in light of the fact that the phase 1 (first in human) volunteers for these vaccines were overwhelmingly white; it was very difficult to get into a phase 3 trial if you were white due to so many white people volunteering (I got a sorry thanks for trying when I answered white but invited to make an appointment when I checked hispanic); and all the white people were eagerly in line for the approved vaccines, to the point where DC was turning unvaccinated white people away from sites that had leftover doses in Ward 8. I find it just as ignorant as the magnet / 5G cell tower people.

NP +1. I am not rooting for anyone to die or get horribly sick but I also don’t care if they (they being vaccine refusers) catch it and get sick or die, regardless of their skin color, political affiliation or anything else. I have zero interest in constraining my life in any large or small way to protect people who are not bothering to protect themselves. Vaccinate or don’t but it’s called assumption of risk. I will do all my shopping, restaurant going and other activities that now require a mask in DC in Virginia or Maryland because I find this a theater of the absurd.
