Possible he was already chosen and yes I agree it helps people move on from Alex. But I don’t recall hearing these guests hosts were auditions. Zero chance a newscaster would take the permanent position. I think most of them love Jeopardy and we’re thrilled to guest host, but wanted nothing beyond that.

It’s possible they offered the job to another guest host first and that person turned it down. Not sure why people assume everyone wanted the permanent gig. Or maybe other guests hosts demanded too much money for the job. You shouldn’t get Trebek cash year one.
