Whelp. Read the same article. Also.mentions that a police car in Mount Pleasant was boosted this week for a joyride. Car theft is officially a punchline on the joke that is DC public safety.

To those of us who have been victimized in DC, such a brazen crime would hopefully be a call action for better police work and prevention.

We've been the victim of car theft in DC and it is horrible. We worked hard to maintain our old car in good condition (no eating in the backseat kids!). It was our only vehicle. It fit our lifestyle perfectly. We had to use rentals for a while after which are expensive, a PITA, and they did that thing where they lost track of one of the cars we turned back in and reported it stolen (by us). Total hassle. We were reimbursed a pittance by insurance. We had to buy a new car which we don't like (better, since it might get stolen) and do it during the pandemic and still dealing with the hassle of the paperwork etc. with an opaque DMV. While we weren't hurt, I hate the idea if our college age kids had been coming in at night and bumped into the thieves in the driveway and the chaos that may have ensued. I hated waking up and looking out of the window and seeing no car and knowing we were silently violated during the night. The lackadaisical police response was saddening. It's not their fault really though. The car theft unit was disbanded years ago; it's not city policy to pursue these cases in any way, so why would they take it upon themselves to do so for our car? Our car was recovered when it eventually ended up in a tow lot, trashed. They have no coordination between accrued ticketing, street cameras, towing and police work/car recovery--we basically tracked it down ourselves by sleuthing various websites-vainly hoping it would still be in usable condition. If our family were in a more fragile economic condition (the car served our means of income as cleaners, uber drivers, delivery, or primary means to get to work) it could have thrown our economic situation into peril. I have been in the "working poor" and there is a thin margin for recovery when "things go wrong", like an illness or having your car boosted. MPD needs to mount a FULL car theft unit.

Newsflash: Victim blaming is far easier than the alternative. That would require work. Work is hard and requires accountability. Victim blaming requires a few key strokes and then we get back to our lattes.

It is DC. We LOVE victim blaming.

Remember when people were getting their iPhones stolen and the police and Council responded with the sage advice that users should not walk with their phones in their hands.

No kidding. I really dislike drone people walking around staring at their phones and walking into things. However, that does not mean that they deserve to be mugged and have their phones taken. Just like it does not mean they deserve to be hit by cars when they step into traffic without looking.

Is it funny and cute to say that their actions brought about the mugging or accident, maybe, but the fact remains that their phones were targeted by muggers.

Was Cheh wrong? Yes. Did that give somebody the right to steal her vehicle? No. When a crime is committed with Cheh's car or an accident occurs with it, is it her fault? Of course not.
