I heard they had 700+ applications last year. Maybe right, maybe wrong. No idea how many they have to admit to yield a class of 200-ish?

I'd up that HSPT to the 90s.

They used to post a report on the education section of the website that wasn't super detailed but you could glean some info by putting 2 and 2 together. No 8th grader this or next year so..havent looked lately.

There is clearly a skewed level of high achievers locally (vs nationally). I don't know the exact numbers.

I think applications try to get that full picture. A composite of activities, sports, grades and test scores will give a bigger profile that can speak to each of these different types of students.

But they're probably doing / turning in the assignments. That's not always the case.

And, as you said, some kids are naturally very bright but unmotivated or lazy.

And, some are very intelligent and don’t have to study to get straight As. They listen in class and things come easily for them.

I think applications try to get that full picture. A composite of activities, sports, grades and test scores will give a bigger profile that can speak to each of these different types of students.

Well just go to the honors brunch at SJC and you will be in a room (more like auditorium) filled with kids who scored the same.

Or is this a myth? I also heard the same thing about the number of kids that get straight As every quarter in MS. When I asked the Principal, the numbers were actually quite low. But, talk to any parent and their kid was a straight A student.

High HSPT scores do not translate to straight As every quarter. Not all "smart kids" are motivated to do the work necessary for straights As. While we're used to what my tween would call "try hards," it's not always the case.

I was once told that the DMV and NYC are the most competitive in terms of high school placement test.

I could believe that. I grew up in this area and my public HS was insanely competitive. When I got to University, I met some valedictorians from other parts of the country that were not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
