They’re not all “great.” Some are appreciably better than others.

Agree with above poster, OP.
Ignore the bs of some of these posters.

All these schools are good, as are e.g. Woodacres and Sommerset in MD.
It depends how old your kids are and what exactly you are looking for.

We did PK-4 at Eaton, it was fine.
We have been at Horace Mann since K. The school is very good, 2 teachers in each class all the way till 5th grade. Makes a huge difference. School is small, about 350-400 kids, which is nice for smaller kids. So, have a look at Mann too.

People seem to love Stoddert as well. Janney is huge, 700 or so kids.
If possible, try and tour the schools, before deciding and listen to your gut feelings.

Also, consider the Middle School/ High Schools the E.S. feeds into. e.g. Mann feeds into Hardy, which though is now better, but I am planning on moving to MD for middle/high schools.

Translation: Eaton is merely “fine” but Mann is very good. Hardy is better than it was but still kind of sucks, enough to move to Maryland for middle school.

DC needs to do better.

All are good schools. Do you need aftercare? do you want them to learn foreign language in pk4? those are the things to look into.
We have been to 2 of the schools and while both are good, I just love one a lot more than the other.

What was the forum? Can you explain? This doesn’t sound good...

The Murch LSAT wanted to start a community discussion about inclusion in our school and about the ways that the school can support the needs of all learners. It is a hugely important topic and has lots of facets, but the session was slated for only an hour and seemed to have a format not suited for the large group of parents and teachers. Ultimately, we need to talk about the racial achievement gap at Murch, is real and problematic. It's a personal and important issue, and one that I am really glad the school is speaking about publicly and inviting community comment about.

Emotions were understandably high, but I wouldn't discount Murch because the parents are passionate and engaged and seeking equity in their school.

I didn't think the forum was comfortable, but I left proud of our school and community, and ready to hunker down and work towards finding answers and seeking solutions.

There’s a lot of small town-type spirit at Janney. The Janney parade through the neighbor is very special.

Therein tells you everything you need to know about the Janney community.

A friend whose kids went to Murch told me that this year, the Lafayette kids are the "popular" (i.e. mean) kids.

That popularity seems to be such a big thing at Deal leads me to believe that Hardy is the place to be.

Go for it!

It’s the school uniforms.

Anonymous wrote:This has devolved into a silly thread.

The demographic differences between all of the Ward 3 ES are insignificant and indiscernible, particularly when you consider how diverse DC and the region really are. Sure Hearst and Eaton have a bit more diversity and OOB but only relative to the rest of the neighborhood - someone coming from a public ES in any other neighborhood in DC would be bewildered to hear a Hearst or Eaton parent bragging about how diverse their school is.

And the comments about the cultures at each school are equally silly and are anecdotes reflecting individual posters impressions of different schools.

But the really silly thing is that unless you have and are willing to spend whatever it takes on your home you may not get to choose which school district you buy in - housing supply has been very tight in all of these neighborhoods for the last 4-5 years so if you see a house you like and can afford you should go for it and ignore all of the silliness on this thread.

One other note - Janney does have a huge advantage that only one other poster referenced - it is the only ES (and this goes for Deal and Wilson too) that is really well situated for getting to and from on multiple forms of public transportation and its location in a commercial area is also very convenient for a number of reasons. Hearst and Hardy are easy to go on the bus but that greatly limits the places you can to the school from - Janney/Deal are reachable not just on Metro but from multiple Metrobus routes as well.

I’m sorry but there is a difference between 20% black at Hearst and Eaton and 5% black at Janney.

There is a difference is in the school achievement test scores. It doesn’t have to do with race but it correlates to higher OOB and lower SES

.

Murch has politics and prose and little red fox. Lafayette has BBM as well.

Eaton has the homeless shelter at Cathedral Commons.
