1. Public opinion swings for impeachment in a major way, including for Republican voters, given how egregious and *easy to understand* this all is.
2. Senators vote to impeach and the GOP proudly unveils a new candidate for the 2020 election.
A very high bar indeed, but... not impossible.
What are chances a new candidate is being vetted right now? Would Nikki go for it at this point or would Pence be in the fight?

Summarily dismiss the charges and end the process
or
Delay any trial for as long as they want.

Of course the Senate can do that. But why should they? Why should they protect a dirty president?

Except they're not, because they never cared about the servers - they just hated Hillary
Jared and Ivanka's private server has never bothered them!
Exactly.
If only Hillary had just baked those f(cking cookies. We could have avoided decades of misogyny.

I say this as someone who did not vote for Trump and would not vote for him. Apparently, the Democrats want to fast track the impeachment decision and hold a vote by the end of October with hearings to be completed by then so that it does not interfere with the primaries that will start in January.
Given that there are less than 15 months to the next election, that is the vehicle to replace Trump.
The impeachment is not about replacing Trump first and foremost. It is about accountability, upholding the Constitution, and ensuring that the Office of the President is not abused and used for personal gain at the expense of our deepest principles, our allies, and at risk to our national security. Waiting for the usual election cycle means allowing these behaviors in the Office of the President (and the offices of those who enabled and covered it up).
That fact that your sole focus is on who is in the office shows that you have lost your understanding of what the office is and why the Constitution is important.
Impeachment is a political/legal process. McConnell can put a stop to it by forcing a vote early in the process and bring the whole thing to a close because the chances of 67 senators voting to convict are negligible.
Besides there is no time frame for the the senate to hold a trial and McConnell could argue that with an election coming up the voters should decide if Trump should remain in office. Sort of what he did when he delayed the confirmation of Garland because an election was going to take place.
