It is because at some level, the white people posting still do not see minorities as people and peers. They don’t realize that if their kids go to school with all white kids they will be picked on for being fat, or ugly, or stupid, or smart, or whatever characteristic that sets them apart from others. But the fear of being called a cracker is a worse fear...uh ok?!

Not sure if they're using the n-word "at home", but a small but vocal number of middle-school students are certainly using it at school. Which is not surprising given its common usage in popular music.


Middle and high school kids - especially boys - occasionally use nasty language because they think its edgy to say shocking and transgressive things. No surprise that immature kids might say something dumb as they try to one-up and out-shock each other.

Just to clarify, I'm not afraid my kid's going to be called a cracker. I mean, if I were, I wouldn't be sending my kid to a majority minority school. My fear is that at some point my middle-school kid is going to respond in kind--even though we've taught them from an early age the n-word is radioactive, and we never use the word at home or anywhere else (though they've certainly heard it used at school). Because at that point it's likely the adults get involved.

So, in short, what I'm concerned about is that adults will elevate middle-school nonsense to the level of local newscasts and we'll be back to hashing things out here on DCUM.

Re: acting white. Just think about your white kid acting black you say you have class problems instead of race issues or whatever but when the shoe’s on the other foot it’s easy to see the ingroup acting like outgroup dynamics.

Both of my now 20 year old stepkids went to racially diverse schools. They both got a lot of grief and bullying from black kids about being mixed race and acting white. One of them wrote her college entrance essay about the negative experiences. Both of them also say they would be more likely the send their kids to a predominantly white school because they never had any problems with white students.


The "acting white" thing is very real and very shameful, not to mention dumb and racist.

My non-religious friend’s child went to a majority Hispanic school and got mercilessly taunted that she would gonto Hell because she was not Catholic.

Without some thought and education, groups can tend toward tribalism.

With that said, I would expect Banneker students to be fairly enlightened.

Just had a foreigner friend remark how he had heard AAs repeteadly used the n word in the street and how shocked he was at the stupidity.


AA’s maybe, but not educated white people. Some people (I’m looking at you Michael Eric Dyson) seem to believe that white people get together behind closed doors and say all sorts slurs like we’re in Montgomery in the 1950’s. It’s just not reality.

There may be a lot of things to complain about in the world today, but use of the n-word by non-AA urban professionals isn’t it.
