Lacrosse appears to be the only sport where possession is so critical to the outcome, but no team is ever guaranteed of having it. See football, basketball, baseball, tennis, soccer. All have alternating possession because the belief is the play on the field should determine the outcome, not a random moment. If the Golden State Warriors lost every jump ball, they would still be the winningest team in the NBA because they are the best team and the jump ball is simply a way to get the game started. If they were a lacrosse team that lost every draw, they would probably lose most of their games.
The NCAA implemented a shot clock for women's lacrosse several years ago. Not sure why the ISL has not adopted it for the girls' high school games. The NCAA adopted a shot clock for men's lacrosse this year, and the IAC and VISAA immediately adopted it for the boys' high school games.
