I agree with the message of this post....and I'm a Maret parent. I'm thrilled with the school, thrilled that my kid loves it and still grateful that they were admitted. That said, to suggest that Maret college matriculation list is better than STA/NCA/GDS/SFS is an exercise in futility. The reality is that they are all amazing schools, slightly different from each other in terms of vibes and ideal students but unquestionably wonderful. It makes more sense to express thanks and gratitude that we're fortunate enough to have a kid there than to try to impute that results are better from one than another.

And by the way, I still believe tha being a great student at a less intense school is the "hack" to high school happiness. Burke, Field, St. Andrews, SSFS and many that take plenty of incoming on these boards are great schools with great outcomes and a hell of a lot less stress.


And Maret too, no? One of the reasons I like Maret so much as a prospective family is that it seems to have challenging classes/rigor without as much stress as GDS/Sidwell. Am I wrong?


No, you're correct. It's certainly challenging and obviously is seen by colleges at a top tier school, but seems to be slightly less stress-inducing as the rest of their peer schools.

I think Maret is generally less cut throat and aggressively competitive and more collaborative and community focused than other top tier schools. Make no mistake, it's academically strong and, while I despise the word, "rigorous," but in a less "homework for the sake of homework" kind of way. Their campus is definitely older and less spectacular, the facilities adequate for sure but not awe inspiring, and the community is filled with families who care less about these things than other things. While cliche, other families are really nice and warm and seem genuine.

We love it.
