People here are class-insecure and status conscious. It took me a while to realize that, but it's true. Housing and cars are what they use to prove their status--and they feel a need to prove it.

No that’s not true.
Apartments appeal to many people. Just keep the density to less than one family of 5 per bedroom.
The apartments in my neighborhood rent for 3K plus per month. It is not a cheap option. I think the stigma might depend on the neighbour hood, but downtown DC this is very common way of life for professional families.
