OP here, it was daycare’s idea to give him a lunch buddy (adult who sits right next to DS). Otherwise, the daycare teachers just sort of hover while the kids eat.
Half this board will still think I’m an over-sensitive, ridiculous, drama queen, with a greedy 14-month old. (Also, I’m still under 40! OK, barely.)
Thanks to all those who didn’t think I was ridiculous with respect to either the feeding evaluation or my parents. Two thoughts: (1) having been raised by my parents, I sometimes need to ask my husband, friends, DCUrbanmom “is this normal?” I sometimes have no idea. (E.g., I don’t really “get” why people think Betty Draper on Madmen was a bad mom.) That’s why I was asking. Obviously if my mother had a pattern of nervous laughter, I wouldn’t be asking. 2) I also am surprised by those who think the feeding evaluation was ridiculous. Even if this had been a one time incident, the pediatrician still had to agree to the referral.
You are 100% in the right, Op! You are a good mom and you are doing a wonderful job watching out for the best interests of your little boy. Any time you have a question feel free to post about it.

It does not matter. Clearly the daycare was noticing that Op's son was having these gagging incidents and reporting them to Op. They also reported the choking incident to Op. And the pediatrician thought there was enough going on there to warrant a more thorough evaluation.
What doesn't matter is all the Monday morning quarterbacking being done by the in-laws and some of the folks on this thread.

So if your child had a kid who has been gagging consistently enough over an eight month period that the daycare has decided to have an adult sit next to him while he eats, and that kid ends to choking instead of just gagging, you'd laugh that your kid did a feeding evaluation? If the daycare is doing this and ordering his food chopped smaller, clearly they are seeing the issues also. OP's parents' reactions were inappropriate.
