It looks like a woman as the POI in the video to me.

I lived in that neighborhood from 2009-2014 and definitely would have referred to it as safe but adjacent to areas not as safe. (Back then I had to leave very early for the airport every Friday morning and was very aware of the prostitution going on, but never felt unsafe because of it while I waited for me ride).

I don’t think anyone is blaming the victim, but they are pointing out that this is unsafe behavior in this area in the hope that other potential victims will take heed.

Walking in the city during dinner time is unsafe? That is insane! Certifiable.

It is (or at least can be) when the city in question is DC, which does nothing to very little to control its crazed, drug addicted homeless population. You are literally taking your life in your hands.

Where do you live, and when was the last time you were in this area? You seriously sound insane.

I am there regularly. Sorry, but you sound blissfully naive. Do you have any idea what goes on in that area after dark? Not only drugs, but also major prostitution.

But it isn't unsafe behavior.

It's not unsafe behavior. It's walking/running while being a woman (like you hear "driving while black), women get unfair, unjust sh!t just walking while being women and not engaging in unsafe behavior or practices. The problem is not the women's behavior. Harassment, sometimes assault, occasionally raped or murdered just for walking while female.

+1
There are laws on the books to address quite a bit of the problematic behavior, and they should be enforced.

How is the death penalty going to stop stuff like that?

I don't think it will. But I think a person capable of a crime like this is beyond help and doesn't deserve to live, full stop. Probably unpopular, but I don't really care. This is an unfathomably disgusting crime and this person is a monster.

This! x a million.

Act like you live in our current world, not the way you think things "should be." So many people just don't get this.

minus a million

That's how we get to living in a society like Saudi, where women can't go out, travel alone, dress a certain way, because men can't control themselves or their actions. Give the men a curfew. Start redirecting, and telling men to be responsible - explicitly assert: don't attack, don't rape, don't shoot, don't kill, don't assault, etc. When you keep putting it on the shoulders of women, the entitlement of men and boys grow - they have no reason to change their end.

I am a female runner, and I am f*cking tired of this sh!t.

That's quite a leap you're making.

I'm a female runner as well, and I know enough to not run in unsafe situations. It's not that hard.

And lol at "explicitly assert: don't attack, don't rape, don't shoot, don't kill, don't assault, etc." I'm sure they'll listen!

Really? So what did the victim do wrong here? She was running in a populated, largely safe urban neighborhood before dark.

Are we sure it wasn't dark? Incident occurred around 8pm. The sun set yesterday at 7:13. Looks pretty dark out on the surveillance video, too.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! Who the eff cares if it was totally dark, or maybe dusk, or even if it was pitch black. Women should be able to run at night, ALONE, anytime of day without morons on the internet saying THEY should have done something differently to "be safe". This woman did nothing wrong. She was violently attacked and murdered for seemingly no reason. If that doesn't send chills up your spine, seek help. But arguing about the status of daylight is not the point of the arguments above. You are part of the problem.

Of course they should be able to. Absolutely. But they can’t. Because it’s not safe. Wishful thinking does not make it otherwise.

You don't think women should be able to walk home at 7:15? Ok.

Of course they should be able to. I wish it were so. But it’s just not a good idea in that area (and many other areas in this city unfortunately). Sorry to break it to you.

Lots and lots of women walk home at 7:15 pm all the time. Here is what happens to them: they get home.

What I don't think is a good idea, is limiting your movements based on the possibility of a very, very rare event happening to you.

Not so rare. Maybe an actual murder, yes, OK, but I guarantee you that many of those walks home involve some measure of harassment. I know several women who have been accosted, grabbed, yelled at, etcetera by homeless while walking home from work on those and similar blocks after dark. They now Uber.

I walk on that block pretty much every day. I have for 15 years. I usually see dozens of other people doing the same. I've never seen anyone be touched inappropriately in any way.
