Well I would rather have my son attend Brown to play a sport he loves than just about any school you could name.

STA parents bragging about D3 commits and NESCAC schools

Nothing has changed

It's a tough sport snowflake. These are young men swinging sticks at each other. STA has a great crew team for you.

I hope these great attitudes persist into the season and onto the field. These boys showed some less than stellar sportsmanship throughout the season last year.

Impressed by the captains this year, which also includes a D3 commit. Also impressed by the captains last year, which included 2 D3 commits. Skilled players on the field. Personable guys off the field. Were especially supportive of my young guy (not just the captains, but all the upperclassmen on varsity). Remember him being terrified when he was shipped off to spring break camp. Turned out to be one of the highlights of his year. He appreciated the kindness of the older boys. So did I.

He’s a good player, maybe even considered talented, but this whole lax bro culture I’ve heard about generally, and specifically at other all boys area schools, concerns me. What’s the lacrosse culture like at St. Albans?

What issues? Is this 8th lax or 7th too?

Can’t speak to 7th. But 8th, the Devils Incarnate. Thank the gods for the 9th and 10th grade laxers. Nice kids as a group. STA, be careful what you wish for...a winnng lax team is not worth admitting sons of douche bags who played in the 80s when a Chevy membership and lots of flow got you admitted to the best schools....Just sayin

Are you talking about current 8th???

You have asked this twice, just read it the bolded above. Of course the PP is talking about current 8th.

“Nerds”? On the current varsity lax team are 3-sport athletes, members of the chorus, orchestra, dramatic and musical plays, honor code committee, and student government. Oh yea, they also are pretty smart. If that’s what you consider “nerdy”, then heck yeah!

and you seriously don't think kids at other IAC schools have 2 - 3 sport athletes who also happen to play lacrosse or are involved in the school play, or play a musical instrument or are involved with the student government.

Get over yourself

Are you talking about current 8th? I have heard of issues with a small group of lax players in that grade but I don’t understand your post. Are you saying the grade is getting problem kids next year?

This speaks loudly just how insane their parents really are.

Insane? I don't think their shrinks would use that word.

Here's the deal. There is a peculiar fixation at St Albans with lacrosse for many reasons.

You get the old guard alums who are board members and major donors who remember the days when St Albans was a powerhouse in the helmet sports. The good old days...

You have these now balding and paunchy dads who played lacrosse in college, the days when any member of a boarding school's varsity could get "recruited" simply by having one's high school coach call over to his buddies coaching in college, who want nothing more than to relive their glory days through their sons.

You have the so-called Washington cave dwellers who over the course of just a generation or two are seeing their fortunes fading and status slipping. Lacrosse is a vestige of the past harking back to the WASPy days of yore. They clutch to it tightly.

You have a lot of St Albans Stepford moms who remember their first crushes who were the lacrosse playing bad boys, with their easy smiles and flowing locks.

You have the current students who are brainy and often nerdy, who think the way to cast off that vibe and get the girls is to be a lacrosse playing bad boy, with the easy smiles and flowing locks.

Hmm I don’t know about the rest but I know many many boys at STA and they are anything but nerdy. Sure, there are good students but many of them are really strong athletes and anything but nerdy.

I guess being nerdy is unacceptable at STA? Nice place you got there.

Nerdy has a negative connotation to it. I think good students that apply themselves and work hard should not be labeled as nerdy. Being smart is looked up to. I think parents that label kids are part of the problem.

You know what a bigger problem is? Helicopter parents who are terrified that their kids can't handle life without constant supervision. These kids couldn't care less what people call them. Get over it and stop being such a whack job.
