Thanks for the insightful and profound comment. Have more wine and pills.

...do you only do things that you would do in front of your kids? That's your cutoff??
OP here, I dont smoke or drink in front of my kids. That is the choice by DH and I have made. My kids have commented on others in social settings that other people seem to drink too much. We talk to them about drinking alcohol responsible. We try to be open because the reality is that our kids will be exposed to alcohol and drugs at some point.
OP, if you believe it's okay to smoke pot and drink alcohol, then your best chance for teaching your children about using both substances responsibly is to actually model that responsible behavior. Talk is cheap. Remember, it's not what you say that really influences them, it's what they see you doing. So be genuinely open with them, and expose them to alcohol and drugs used in ways that you believe model responsible use.
Odd. Do you suggest having sex in front of your kids too? This is ridiculous. Some do believe and adhere to the idea that adult activities should be conducted only with other adults. Just like sex, you can speak at the age appropriate time and levels regarding your approach to various adult topics.

It is still illegal. At lest wine / beer is legal and there are social norms in place that make it easy to drink in front of your children.
I try not to get drunk in front of my kids, although I might have one drink in front of them. I don't want them to see me full on drunk (although they have once or twice). But even after a drink or two they'll accuse me of being drunk -- because they have no real context.
I don't partake, but if I did I probably would do it when children were not around. Because, again, it is illegal and they have no sense of what makes it acceptable/not acceptable. They do get drug brainwashed at school.
I also don't smoke (regular tobacco) but I would also not do that when children are around even though that is legal. There is a huge stigma about smoking that alcohol doesn't have, and to smoke in front of your kids will result in them harrassing you.
What about second-hand smoke?
When you smoke pot, the smoke is released in the air. It gets in your hair, on your clothes, your bed sheets, etc. Do you really think that your kids or your neighbors can't smell you smoking pot?
You can enjoy a glass of wine, without second-hand fumes affecting anyone else but you.
Again, pot-smoking is not the same as enjoying a glass of wine.

What would you do if your child woke up with a medical emergency and you and your DH had consumed a glass of wine?
I would have to have two full glasses to feel a a slight warm buzz. And, wine doesn't make you 'see' things or have an out of body experience or make you paranoid or make your personality change.
pot does.
I'm not against pot, but don't fool yourself and treat it like a glass of wine.
For a kid, it's really upsetting to see your parents high -- whether wasted on booze or high on pot.
Uh, you must be pretty old. “see things”? Really? The different strains these days are for a variety of different purposes. Obviously, you don’t know how much this billion dollar industry has grown with legal recreational in several states.
