I do think there is a strong link between the historic homophobia of the church and the sexual abuse problem. The church long condemned homosexuality but also long accepted it within its ranks as basically inevitable. As a result of this ambivalence, the church hierarchy was unable to distinguish between what’s normal (homosexuality) and what’s not normal (preying on people not capable of giving meaningful consent). I think there was sort of an attitude of “oh, well the gays do that” and so they weren’t able to probe into what was really disordered behavior. (I really do think that a priest repeatedly sleeping with young women would have been dealt with.). I do know priests that had a single consensual gay act with a non-parishioner and they were lumped in with the predators.
I have a strong hope that with a new era of understanding of homosexuality and open welcoming of gays into the church community, that we will finally be able to make real change on this problem.
Also, I cannot for the life of me understand why the church does not allow female priests. I think it is a huge loss to the community and one which makes no sense. I know many nuns who feel the same. I think we’re all just waiting it out, accepting that the church is 50 years behind the times. If they haven’t caught up in the next 20 or so, I will encourage my children to find a new faith for my grandchildren.

For the life of me, I cannot understand how anyone can pay a penny to the church. The corruption is so deep and so wide. A new leaf has most definitely not been turned over.

Have your faith. Practice privately, and find another way. But don't give a penny to the church until they break it down and rebuild with full transparency (and women in positions of power, and allow people to marry).

I don’t know how you can separate the Catholic Church pedophilia scandal from homosexuality. Surely you are not Catholic if you can say that and believe it. The Catholic Church is a majorly homophobic institution and has definitely attracted the gay men who didn’t want to act out on their homosexuality, because being gay is super frowned upon. I actually thought McCarrick was straight which made him more appealing as a homilist. Some of the priests are so ‘different’ that it’s very hard to imagine them relating to anything a lay person goes through. I think maybe the priest weren’t really seeking children but they thought that they could get away with the abuse because the boys wouldn’t tell. They acted out with boys because they saw that as their best option.

But the issue isn't that some priests are gay, it's that they are pedophiles. And the church seems to have Been ok with that.
If a priest is gay and seeks out adult male relationshsips, that's an issue bc he broke his vow of celibacy. No different than if he choose to be with a woman. If the priesthood was just attracting gay men, then they would just be having relationships with each other, and since they are consenting adults, that may be a religious wrong doing but not a legal one.

If a priest choose to seek out children and teens for relationships instead of adults, that's an issue of pedophilia and it doesn't matter if they are seeking boys or girls because it is still legally and morally wrong and perverted.
