UVA is prestigious if you're a multi-millionaire and your kid has the look, attitude and high school pals to get into 1 of 6 "top tier" frat or sorority houses.

No way is it equivalent to Duke. Where do you get that? As others have pointed out it's about the same level as UNC-CH or Wake Forest. Maybe Michigan.

I'm a UChicago grad. It's recognized where it needs to be recognized, but most people I talk to who ask don't know about it. While I was an undergrad at UChicago, I often got the reaction from Chicago folks that they saw it as a state school.

It's actually a big meme among UChicago grads- how poorly recognized it is or how people confuse it for a state school thanks to its name.


That was in the past. It was all the rage this year.

This is all false.

The part about Chicago is untrue (lived there for 8 years, people definitely know UChicago for what it is) but I DO agree that most schools are regional (save for HYPS). I grew up in Colorado, and when I told people I was going to Penn, the number of people who thought I was going to Penn State (e.g. “oh, the football games are so fun!”) was a LOT.

Nice try Duke #9 on USNWR and UVA #25 - that's a pretty big difference. Notre Dame is definitely a bigger name on the national scene and Vandy (ranked #14) is also way ahead of UVA.

No way is it equivalent to Duke. Where do you get that? As others have pointed out it's about the same level as UNC-CH or Wake Forest. Maybe Michigan.

This thread is going all over the place. UVA law is probably below Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, and Columbia, but on par with or better than all the others. (On par with Michigan, Cal, Penn, etc.). That's pretty good. It would be ranked above Cornell law.

Prestige is all relative. I would say UVA undergraduate certainly has a level of prestige, but it certainly isn't going to travel as far and as strongly as Harvard. But that is a pretty rarefied standard.

When people get into arguments about schools that are significantly closer together on the "prestige scale", it always becomes a food fight.

Now, I’m a lawyer, and the UVA law school has a great reputation. Getting in as an OOS student is considered to be very impressive, and a UVA law degree is prestigious. Not ivy level It won’t get you a SCOTUS clerkship. But, one step down, and it will get you looked at seriously by most major firms.

Don’t know enough about the other grad programs enough to comment, except to say the OOS UVA is considered to be less prestigious than VT in engineering.

And i have no skin in this game yet. I am not an alum of these school, and don’t have a kid old enough to be seriously considering one. That’s just the general thoughts from a neighboring state.

BTW— Pomona, CM, Mudd— amazing schools. I would love to send a kid there someday. Sadly, will probably be priced out, even if they could get in.



Well, smarty pants, here’s the thing: UVA law grads do in fact get Supreme Court clerkships. I know several of them personally. Beyond that, of course it makes little sense for a North Carolina resident to pay out of state tuition to go to UVA when they could go to UNC. UNC is one of the best public universities in the country, just behind UVA.

And UVA is definitely more highly regarded than wake forest.


1. As to UVA and UNC, we agree. If you read what I said. UVA is no better than UNC (or other good flagship state Us, like Michigan or some UCs).

2. You might think that UVA is more highly regarded than Wake. But get out of the NOVA bubble. US News currently has UVA one spot ahead of Wake. And that ha changed very little in the last decade. Outside of NOVA, UVA really isn’t considered a better school. And I don’t have a dog in this fight. But have lived in several states. NOVA is the only place that would say UVA is a measurably better school for undergrad.

3. We also agree that UVA is a great law school. You are delusional if you think it is a Harvard/ Yale equivalent though.
