My MCPS kids have been in both Focus and Title I schools, and in both cases I've seen their classmates take advantage of Saturday School to either remediate challenging subjects or to get the kinds of "fun" gifted activities that many of us benefited from as kids - engineering challenges, brain teasers, etc.

I honestly don't know why anyone would oppose this. It engages families who are actively seeking out opportunities for their kids, but who can't afford Mathnasium or other truly private tutoring programs.

It is a net benefit for MCPS and also for the schools targeted.


Nobody ‘opposes’ the program. I’m sure it’s great. My neighbor attends.

However, we do oppose using Public School Money to fund a Private School. Unless you are for Charter Schools (which maybe you are?).

I think a Water Park would benefit the MCPS community. The kids would get outdoors more. Studies show that kids who get more outdoor time can focus better in school. Should we use $625K of MCPS money to fund it?

It's a non-profit organization that gets payment from MCPS. I'm sure that it's not the only non-profit organization that gets payment from MCPS. I'm also sure that MCPS is not the only public school districts that pays money to non-profit organizations.


AND one that has a full time, MCPS paid for principal. Principal is on MCPS payroll with benefits. How many other non-profit organizations can say that?

It's a non-profit organization that gets payment from MCPS. I'm sure that it's not the only non-profit organization that gets payment from MCPS. I'm also sure that MCPS is not the only public school districts that pays money to non-profit organizations.

Can you show me some I dependent Data that demonstrates how Saturday School is run efficiently and well? Or some stats that show how successful it is?

How can you say that it’s money well spent? I would argue that MCPS could use that money with all the budget shortfalls.

I don't think it's a charter school. I think it's a tutoring/academic support program.


I didn't say it was. I said it was the closest thing to one. However, it functions in the same way. (I have had experience with charters. So I know how they work.) Hiring Barkley to run it is not unlike hiring another MCPS administrator to run a full blown charter. So I'm sure the guidelines for GBTLA are similar to those found in a charter.

It has a board, too - http://www.saturdayschool.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Annual-Report-2015-Final.pdf (pg. 17). So there is outside oversight.

I think the program is successful based on what I've heard from friends whose children have attended.


Exactly. Outside oversight. This private school is not under the MCPS umbrella but the salary comes from MCPS.

Outside oversight is much different from being run by MCPS.

Though, the way MCPS has been run this past decade, many would argued that is a good thing.

In which case, it absolutely opens up the doors to MCPS supporting the idea of Charter Schools. Maybe that is what they are working towards. Private schools that get money from MCPS and are run by independent boards.
