My DC didn't like Uva, and doesn't really want to be in 13th grade with a bunch of Nova kids DC has been with since AAP days.

Davidson has better reputation for undergraduate teaching, high marks for "profs are accessible," although also it's also reputed to be much tougher academically.

Will visit on accepted students day and see how DC likes it.

you're comparing apples and oranges. My DC wanted a SLAC so I'd happily pay for Williams or Amherst. If DC wanted a research uni I would have happily paid for one that's more competitive than UVA.

As with all things, it depends. I went to Amherst and live in VA. I would gladly pay for DD to go there and she's got the grades and scores, but DD wants a larger research university with engineering so UVA is ahead...and she probably won't apply to Amherst.
I think Williams is great and would gladly send her there as well.

Huh? by "social status" I mean the parents are all members of the same southern country club or the same debutante society in town, not SES on a national scale. Again the schools were comparable on social scene, parties, Greek life. The parents may have gone there as well.
