We did end up cozying up by the fire. Having lots of champagne and having a movie night with the kids.
Think we will throw our own party next year...
Happy 2018!
Oh and forgot to add: we did get a call from the hosts of the other party, asking us to please swing by. So that was a feel-good moment (hey perhaps we are not social pariahs after all).
Why didn’t you go to the other party, especially after they called and said they still wanted to see you? You bailed on them. Why not spend time with people who want to be friends with you, and don’t spend time worrying about neighbors who don’t value your friendship they way you thought they did? Missed opportunity here.
+1
Also it seems you already committed to housesitting for the neighbors, but do let this be the last time.
Hope your New Year's resolution is to put your energy where it is appreciated.

I mean is that I thing, to send generic cards where it's unclear what the holiday being celebrated is? Otherwise why not just say "Christmas card" or "Yule card" or "Hanukkah card?" I don't get it.
And no you can't just show up.
Yes, people say happy holidays. That’s still legal in 2017.
I send holiday cards. I also say merry Christmas. It’s not that hard.
And others would prefer not to. It’s a personal choice. Is it that hard to understand not everyone thinks like you?

Did they apologize for not sending you an invite?

Don't throw your own party next year. Everyone will still go to the other party and you will look like losers. Your first step should be to understand why you weren't invited this year. Maybe there's something about you that is off-putting and you will eventually lose more friends.
