TJ has been revamped. But changes really need to be aimed more at the lower grades, and given time to work, before talking about closing TJ.

I'm pretty sure disadvantaged blacks and Hispanics aren't the ones who want to close TJ. I think fewer whites are applying to TJ because they don't want to be in a predominantly Asian school. Many non-Asians also don't see the benefit of the pressure cooker environment of TJ. I think TJ should stay for those who want that environment, and I also understand why many parents are discouraging their kids from applying to TJ (including parents who went to TJ themselves). One Fairfax should not impact TJ, it should be focused on truly getting the same caliber of teachers and curriculum into schools across Fairfax.

DS just started 3rd grade AAP. His class is over 50% non-Asian minorities. DS is Asian-American. There are only 2 Asian kids in his class. I am sure several of those kids may end up at TJ. Don’t know if it matters but the African American kids are mostly children of African immigrants.

Not all students are cutout for magnet schools. TJ ensures top students Gets the education they need rest gets education in regular high school.

Learn English, and then you can weigh in on what other students can handle.

I looked at the numbers and saw that Asians get in at a much higher rate than the rest. Agree whining never solves any problem . A child with an average IQ going to Sunshine will rarely make it to TJ (there are always exceptions like here http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/683375.page). The one who gets admitted is already high achiever.

Believe it or not , for many Asian family, getting in to TJ starts with kindergarten. So its a long race.

Not every kid at TJ is a US citizen. There's been a few posts indicating that they are, but that is not true. You do not have to be a US citizen to be admitted to TJ.

The public schools here teach all children, US citizen or not.
