I guess you must be blinded by all of the Stucco and Plaster. McLean is the Klassy place to live.

Most people have one spouse that doesn't work, and 99% of the time the spouse is female.

Wut?
Is that a bad thing that one spouse doesnt't work? Good for the Langley PTA. Last time I checked, their PTA fund has over 250K
no, but poster should know that. a 2 working couple would not fit in.
Herndon has PTAs at night so all can join.
Langley/Mclean have them during the day so the stay at home mom can go. no one has to work.
It is true that most kids have a non working Moms in Mclean, but no one will judge if both parents work. If you want to do PTA just leave work for an appointment for a few hours. Mclean schools and neighborhoods will be better for your kids and save $$ in the long run. You should move from Alexandria.
Longfellow mom checking in. All of my son's friends' parents work, moms and dads. I don't know whether I'm feeding a troll but the premise that Mclean moms don't work is completely false. When my son was in grade school maybe 20% of the moms stayed home(doing God knows what all day) but once the kids are old enough to go home alone they returned to work. Aside from the chronically lazy, who wouldn't?
Early retirement and enjoy life....ever heard of it? I mean work is great and all but I can think of a million things I would rather do. No job is really that important.
lol. The mom that immediately came to mind is a pediatric oncologist. Talk about irrelevant professions.
You need to check your privilege if you consider stopping working at 38 as 'early retirement'

At the time, we had massive student loans and I worried about paying our mortgage, childcare and student loans. Fast forward to now, our income has gone up significantly, we have no debt besides the mortgage, have two kids in elementary and have enough savings to pay off our mortgage if we wanted. Older child is in AAP and younger child should also get into AAP in the future. Kids are thriving, play sports and have lots of friends. Neighbors are great. Life is good. We have seen many people move to better school districts. We like our house. Never thought it would be our forever home. It isn’t perfect but good enough. Kitchen, bathrooms and deck could use a renovation.
We work in DC so commute time could decrease if we move to McLean or Arlington. Places like Bethesda would also decrease commute time. These areas are also more expensive. Instead of being debt free, we would have to start over and get a new bigger mortgage. We would want a better home, not a worse home for the same price.
Would you move or stay put?

Anonymous wrote:There was a recent issue of Saxon Scope published by the students in which the opinion talked about the elitism culture at Langley. Then a subsequent issue had another sophomore taking issue with the opinion. Her mom was extremely upset from the editorial. The parents that are hyper achievers and pushing their kids over the top never see themselves as part of the issue. They don't just start at high school, there are insane postings on this board about gaming the AAP and tests and lawyers and where to move. Things I never thought about and never thought other parents thought about. So I think OP would fit right in with the other moms at Langley. do not give it a second thought. but another option is rather than talking to the other parents, you might want to talk to your own child and teachers. somehow I doubt you would ask these same questions of the teachers and counselors.
Some quotes about elitism at Langley, Saxon Scope, page 16, April 2014
"Yet, the primary issue with many NOVA parents is that they're reproductive narcissists. They create copies of themselves in their children to vicariously relieve their glory days. Those very parents that drown themselves in their own success eventually end up rubbing their feelings of superiority onto their children, who unfortunately, crowd the halls of Langley, leaving us to endure their arrogance and silently wonder if we are the same."
