Just realised that I am still subject to the assumptions of my fundamentalist upbringing, despite being an apparently modern woman with a profession. Had a major disappointment at work this week that showed me I have prioritised my husband's needs and job over my own. I neglected my priorities in a way that is toxic for both of us and our relationship. Not anymore! Am infuriated with him and myself, but also learning. Just wanted to share, since I assume the sisterhood is active on DCUM!

Lmao. Good one.
My old shoes did not ingratiate themselves to me this morning, so I wore my new ones.
Woke up and smell the caffeine, sheep!
Hey! That's blood, not caffeine! Don't you know sheep come running once blood has been ingratiated into the water?![]()

Anonymous wrote:The funny thing is that incorrect user and the correct grammarians have both failed to explain why they each believe they are correct. Instead, the best they do is post a link to the definition of claim they know what the word means and proceed to call each other names. Men are just as capable of being stubborn and nitpickey, but they will engage in mansplaining and eventually settle the issue.
So here goes: as pointed explained in the merriam Webster link above, to ingratiate oneself requires "deliberate effort". Deliberate effort can only be undertaken by sentient beings. Abstract concepts, like art, philosophy, the patriarchy, etc..., are no more capable of deliberate effort than an inanimate object is capable of deliberate effort.
To suggest that an abstract concept is capable of ingratiating itself to society is the rough equivalent of suggesting that a stop sign can ingratiate itself to a larger community.
I'm not sure if incorrect user PP sincerely thinks she knows what the word means or is simply incapable of admitting a mistake and moving on, but eventually the sheer number of posters telling inccorect user PP that she is wrong should have caused a reevaluation or at least a request for an explanation for why other posters are convinced incorrect user is wrong.

I think the ingratiate poster is not a native English speaker
and/or might have special needs. The sheep converging on blood (huh?) "metaphor" gave it away. There is a language processing problem at work here.
The mixed metaphors is perfectly acceptable provided everyone listening is native to English, particularly when the speaker specifies that they did mix metaphors. However, not being native-English speakers would involve many of the processing issues some of the other posters are describing.
No, it makes no sense. Sheep smelling blood and attacking? Wolves are also pack animals, so she could have used the correct phrase to imply that everyone was engaging in pack behavior by ganging up on her. Which we weren't, each of us individually found her defense of her incorrect grammar ridiculous.
