I know a girl who got into UVA with 1520/2400 SAT and 3.2-3.3 unweighted GPA, no ECs, no officer positions, no awards, nothing noteworthy except for some volunteer work, average essays (poor writer in fact) and recommendations, no hooks, not URM. This person would have a tough time getting into UMD or any decent colleges.

Another school I don't get - just like UVa - is UNC. I know they ranked high (like UVa) if you follow ranking... But, seriously, I can't think of anything great that came out of UNC (expect MJ).

If you want global research to be the top item your undergrad (?) seeks internationally, then fine, but that list is relevant only to those doing grad work in selective international fields. https://news.virginia.edu/content/among-nations-elite-us-news-gives-uva-no-2-public-university-ranking

Please define "global research". You are correct that these are biased toward research-intensive institutions, but it is all funded research, not some narrow "international field".

I think you are under-estimating the importance of undergrad research experience. It is critical important if your DC wants post college education. And any research, by definition, is global. No borders, no walls in research.

It reflects the amount of serious study and brainpower in the institution. U.M d will always benefit greatly from its location inside the beltway. When you have on campus installations of National Archives, the Phillips Collection, NOAAs weather prediction center, FDA, Homeland Security, American Physics institute, Raytheon, USDA and NASA around the corner along with the national mall a ten minute metro ride away you are going to have serious brainpower on campus with lots of Nobel winning visiting professors.

U.S. News & World report you said? Pretty sure you have heard of them, right?

UMD #40
UVA #99

LOL

Interesting list. I find it funny how many schools that DCUMs drool over (CMU-67, Emory- 70, Brown-85, Tufts- 156, Dartmouth- 198, Georgetown- 279) are ranked well below schools the same people turn their nose up at (i.e. Boston U- 32, U of Minnesota- 38, Ohio State- 43, Penn State- 56)

They probably factor in $ spent on research.
