I am an SSA attorney, and you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. None. Obama's rule says that if you need a rep payee for SSI/SSDI due to mental illness, then you can't buy a gun. Now, getting SSI/SSDI on mental illness alone is tough. A combination of mental illness, physical illness, over age 55 and less than a high school education-- much less so. But just mental illness is a high bar. You blow way past anxiety, depression and even somewhat controllable bipolar, and are looking at things psychosis and schizophrenia. A good rule of thumb: you have been committed for at least three two week periods in the last year. And getting a rep. Payee is even harder. You have to be that mentally ill plus incompetent. In many cases, rep payees are used because someone has a serious substance abuse history too, or an IQ below 60 and there is no way they will use the money for housing and foot. They will give it away or buy drugs. Now, you would think that common sense dictates that a psychotic person having a gun is a bad thing. But in case it doesn't, consider this. Most SMI peripheral will not use their gun to kill someone else. They will kill themselves. Because you have to be a danger to yourself to be committed for 3 two week periods a year.

In completely UNRELATED news, SSA did just change the criteria for mental illness. However, those laws went into effect this month, and no one knows how it will play out IRL. But, it takes known problems with applying the current guidelines and tries to correct them. Right now, the system is too subjective and focuses on the wrong things. This is an attempt to get a more uniform result and have less guesswork. My initial read on it is that fewer people will qualify, not more. But that we will do a better job at getting the people we should. It will be a couple years before we know, because of the backlog. But, this change has nothing to do with the rep payee gun law.

Truthfully, I can say I have not idea if they need probable cause to ask such a question. And I don't think it's an outrageous question and I believe that if I was in a foreign country living and working as an American I would also expect to be asked a similar question.

It appears the raid in Alexandria was actually in Fairfax Coubty, off of Route 1 south of the Mt Vernon area (that's pretty far from Alexandria, further south than the Michaels/ pets mart and Home Depot shopping Center). Anyway there is a church that serves as a hypothermia shelter for men, at around 6:45am ICE came there as men were leaving and arrested 6 men, and detained at least one other who was released because he had a green card. There is no information if those arrested had criminal records or were specifically targeted. This info was in a letter from McAullife to DHS hat was published online yesterday.

Perhaps you haven't read that Mexico is going to put aside 50million dollars to have illegals jam up the American courts to slow down the deportation process? Mexico said they won't take any one back unless they can prove they are Mexican citizens.

The woman in Phoenix that was recently deported and her story was all over the news. Her deportation order was issued in 2013. So they are at least 4 years behind in rounding up people and that is after Obama apparently had the most deportations of any President.

I think it's realistic that people who know they have a deportation order issued for them have to expect that some day the feds will make good on the order and come for them.
