I live near Shepherd Park and commute to Arlington. OP said her current commute is 55 minutes. Mine is 45 minutes now that Rock Creek Park is closed, it was 30-35 before.
PP here. Do you commute during off hours? Commute of 30-35 minutes is shorter than my commute downtown during rush hour..
Whoops, PP again--corrected in bold.

You may not get into your IB but you will probably get in somewhere when she is 3. That buys you several years to decide whether long-term city living with kids suits you. We love it here but I get families who move in the upper grades. We've been doing a mix of public and private depending on what each kid needs.
This.

Start researching the preschools and familiarize yourself with the lottery now.
If you rent in DC you will have free full time preschool for your child. This makes a HUGE difference in your budget.
You would love ve Silver Spring, but the commute to Arlington would not work.
Ok thank you for this - i google mapped the metro commute and it only said 39 mins on the red line to the silver/orange so I thought it could be possible. (My current nj transit commute is 55 mins door to door and brooklyn to work was 50.) we''ll look in DC proper
Isn't your husband working near Union Station? I don't know why you are fixating on Silver Spring or even Mt. Pleasant, northern parts of the District (please don't say "DC proper."). The Hill, Navy Yard or North Arlington are your best bets. All of them have a good level of diversity including interracial families. They may not have the most in terms of families just like yours but you wouldn't be a unicorn.
Apologies! I'm learning.
1. You can say DC proper (it's typically used by transplants but it's not off limits)
2. North Arlington is not very diverse and likely over your budget unless you want a shack.
3. If you're used to a 55 minute commute I would second Shepherd Park DC or Silver spring (both few stops from union station). Slight preference for Shepherd elementary as it has tons of interracial families and a great elementary where you can send kid at age 3 and feeds to best middle and high in DC.
