I don't think you know much about South America. It doesn't take a sophisticated criminal to dress like the police (assuming he wasn't actually robbed by the police.) It is a SUPER common scam. The state department has travel warnings to many countries warning people of this scam. In some countries, people can buy police gear in any corner store.

Also, I don't know about you, but if I was done swimming in a disappointing Olympics and had just been robbed at gunpoint in a dangerous city, I would definitely call it quits and return home. He isn't treated too shabbily in the US, either.

If I had been robbed at gunpoint in a foreign city, I would be on the next plane out of there with a vow never to set foot in that country again. I agree that the whole story doesn't add up and is quite fishy, but him leaving Brazil is not one of the fishy parts, IMO. That could go either way.

If he stayed in the olympic village, he wouldn't have had to wear pants all week if he didn't want to.
