Another vote for Pittsburgh - I'd also recommend Manchester Craftsmens Guild there, in addition to all the other stops. I like everything about Pittsburgh except the Penguins (ugh!)

I'd also recommend Louisville, KY, especially the Churchill Downs Museum and 21C museum hotel. Great food and an amazing hotel experience.

If you have kids, and it's summer, take them to Schlitterbahn. Terrific waterpark!

Agree with Adirondacks - summer or winter. Good skiing at White Face and Gore.

Traverse City is fun! Especially if hokie putt-putt golf is ok. Great place to relax and just laugh.

Oh, and the UP is beautiful.

Glacier National Park. Takes some work to get there, but is beyond stunning.

When I was 17 I spent two weeks in he Black Hills in SD working at Mammouth Hot Springs (digging bones). It's open to tourists and on our days off we went to Custer state park (beautiful) swam in the hot springs pool in Hot Sprints SD, and saw Mount Rushmore. So another vote for Black Hills. An often overlooked (but not exactly hidden) vacation spot I love in summer and winter both is Sun Valley Idaho. From their you can easily drive (in summer) to Craters of the Moon (forget if that's a national or state park) which is overlooked and pretty cool. It's an old volcanic flow where they practiced for the moon landing.

Vail
Asheville
Wyoming

These are all "destinations"

+1. Coastal Maine? Acadia? Not really "hidden gems"

Coastal Georgia, and the Okefenokee swamp. Cumberland Island is amazing.
