Non-spanking parent here, and also a preschool teacher. I hope those of you who spank realize that your kids are learning that when mommy and daddy get upset, they hit others; I've seen it time and time again. I also hope you know that preschool kids talk about all sorts of things that go on in their home, so if you are spanking them and think it's a secret -- it's not. They've told me, and yes, I have judged you for it.

Pull your pants down, bend over and grab your ankles. Then you grab a belt and spank. The amount of licks depends on the offense and the aftermath like running away, crying ect. Running away or crying immediatly gets double if not tripple the lickings. A licking is a swat with a belt by the way.

Um, it's completely natural & understandable to cry when you know you're about to get hit on your bare bottom with a freaking belt!

For us, we don't do it out of anger or in the moment, which I think could be confusing. So one of us will sit down with the child and briefly go over the behavior that has earned the spanking. Then put him or her over our knee and give three or four spanks on the bare tush.

There's crying, of course, but it's not an out of control angry event.

Me too. It is one thing for a parent to be at their wits end and give a kid a swat in the moment if they've really crossed the line...but this weird, ritualized routine in which the parent is totally calm is just so...gross.

Apparently we've all been doing it wrong, whether spanking, timeouts, time ins, reward charts, losing privileges, grounded, etc.

Just wondering here - why do parents spank on the bottom at all? Why not hit them on the arm, torso, or head? Is it because hitting a child on the butt doesn't leave visible marks? Or is it because of the increased humiliation from having the parent hit private parts?

If you do time outs occasionally, or even more frequently than that, then that discipline technique must not work. Obviously. Must be time to try something else.
