Sincere question- why would you rank Brent or Maury when it's mathematically impossible for you to get in?
Everyone kept saying this and I didn't list either of these schools on my list. My kid got a terrible lottery number and didn't get into our IB Hill school so it wouldn't have mattered, but I now realize that you have to take what happened in previous years with a grain of salt. It appears that Maury still wait listed IB kids, but that all IB kids got into Brent. This means that a few OOB kids did or at least might get into Brent this year. According to the Capitol Hill email traffic, the most likely theory about what happened is that real estate IB for Brent, which is also right near the Metro, got so expensive that families with young children can't afford to move there. There are simply fewer preschoolers in the neighborhood, which means demand is down. If you have a few extra spots on your list, it isn't a mistake to throw on a school that is convenient even if they didn't take kids last year. Apparently, things can change very rapidly and significantly from year to year.
Get your facts straight. Only all IB siblings got into Brent. Most IB kids were shut out. Capitol Hill email traffic is saying no such thing. Maybe you and your not very aware friends think this, but you're wrong. And your reasoning is ridiculous. If you go to an open house, they will usually tell you "we have X number of applications for Brent and X number of spots. We anticipate that we will fill all IB spots and there will be no room for OOB kids. It is mathematically impossible if you also take into account OOB with sibling. If you're just OOB, you're wasting a perfectly good spot that could go to a safety like Appletree or Eagle Academy. There will always be someone on here who thinks you can't waste a spot, but it really is a waste if you have zero chance of getting in- such as Maury and Brent. This does not apply to charters as they only have sibling/staff preference. Stop spreading misinformation.

That is a big difference, but I think the logic still stands. I know a number of people who got in to Brent with no sibling preference, which is very different from the last few years. The point is that schools change and your chances change from year to year. A school that was a long shot can become a school where you have a shot very quickly, just as a school where you think you have a good shot (like LT or JOW) can become an impossibility very quickly. Unless you have all low probability schools among your 12, it can't hurt to add a school where things might change.
Last year is the first year that all IB siblings didn't get into Brent PK3. Last year was an anomaly, not this year. PK4 still has IB siblings on the waitlist. I agree with your point though. If you have available slots, there's no point not listing places you would like your child to go, even if they are long shots.

I would be shocked if there were essentially no wait list after round 1 of the lottery for Bancroft PK3, especially since apP claims no preference. I knew IB families who never got in off the wait list last year and had lottery #s in the 30s even with the preference.

Sounds like you are #7 of post-lottery applicants.
Is this right? I thought there was only one wait list for each school. For example, I added Breakthrough to our post-lottery app and got WL #135. I can't imagine 134 people applied post-lottery to Breakthrough already.
Right! I don't think there's a separate post-lottery list. We're in the upper hundreds for other schools added post lottery. They just add you to the bottom of the waitlist.

West parent here - to the parent asking. We have had a great prek3 year and have been happy with the school. The new principal has been very responsive and engaged with students and parents. The ECE teachers are all warm, engaged and the kids all seem to be happy coming to school. My DC has grown and all of her teachers (art, Spanish, dance, PE etc) seem to know her, are engaging and she speaks highly of them. It isn't perfect but there are involved parents that have ideas and are trying to set up new things (more enriching aftercare etc) to make the school better.

We were #1 on the WL for Cap City last year for PK3 and did not get a call! I think siblings actually moved ahead of us. I only actively followed the WL for 2-3 months though. I think Cap City is a special case though for siblings because it goes all the way through high school. I think you will get in somewhere with your WL numbers. Also I have friends who were happy with Barnard for PK...I think the issue though was many kids leaving in older grades.
