On a related note, my not stellar HS BF got into Johns Hopkins undergrad with a not particularly preview GPA and a mediocre SAT. They invited him to interview and literally told him in the interview view that what stood out the most was his chutzpah in applying when he clearly wasn't typical Hopkins material. He got in.
