What does Wilson offer that Eastern does not? Other than higher SES cohort, are not the subjects the same at both schools. It appears that Eastern offers more, with both AP and IB. Therefore, it must be the majority/minority that turns you away. What should DCPS do with these brown and black kids to make the white parents comfortable sending their kiddies there? Perhaps ship them all across the river so that you can be comfortable.

DCPS is not segregating the schools. White families and the few Asain families in this city have decided to self-segregate.

It has a lot to do with choices of high schools for parents. It's one thing for the top AA students at Banneker or Eastern to score in the 600s on SATs, which most seem to do, another thing altogether for my Asian children (with a distinctively Asian surname). No reason for them to apply to elite college without 700s - they'll surely be rejected out of hand. If a DCPS HS doesn't have a track record of delivering high SAT scores, much better for us to look at BASIS, privates or the burbs.

It's going to be interesting to see how DCPS and the politicians react when the in-boundary percentage at the rebooted Eastern starts to drop, and continues to drop for years to come. They seem to have tunnel vision on the issue, with the in-boundary percentage currently a reassuring 63%. Flash forward six or eight years, and few of us on the Hill be surprised to see an in-boundary percentage at Eastern in the 30s or 40s. I grew up in a low-income family (qualifying for free lunch through MS, though my proud immigrant parents wouldn't accept the food). My younger sister was also a semifinalist, and as was my lower middle-class spouse and her brother.

What I had that the Banneker and Eastern kids lack were mostly high SES white and Asian classmates. I wanted in and asked classmates' professional parents how to get there.

DCPS, please end apartheid education on Capitol Hill past elementary school and Stuart-Hobson. Find a way to integrate Eastern in five years or less. The half-baked IB Diploma Program pretty clearly isn't going to do it.



For one, most Banneker and Eastern students have very highly educated teachers from the upper middle class who serve as role models to them everyday. Have you seen the credentials of some of these DC teachers???? They are teaching and guiding students on how to get into the upper middle class. Hence, a graduating class with 100% college acceptances and millions in scholarships. I'd say those Banneker kids are on their way, wouldn't you?

No one's segregating those schools. Whites and Asians have--like you--looked at SAT scores (or whatever) and decided they don't want their children to attend the school. Welp! Seems like those college-bound kids are doing just fine anyway.

PS: Banneker had a 100% college acceptance rate this year with $20 million in scholarships awarded to the graduating class. (Or was it $10 million? I'm almost certain it was 20.)

I'm not sure of last year's stats, but I'm certain they were equally impressive.

I'm so shocked DCUM posters are not aware of these types of things. Instead of being turned off to lower than national SAT scores, I'm quite impressed what those kids are able to do despite difficult circumstances in many cases.

I'm always amused by these, "DC needs us to improve their schools. They'd better get with the program if they want me to send my white snowflake in there to save the day." But I don't think the attitude comes from believing black kids need to be exposed to them. Instead, they believe their children's scores are needed to improve the school. Truth is, their little snowflakes and their scores will likely not be any more competitive than the fiercely motivated Avery Coffeys of the DC system.

Really, I am reading these post that is pro SAT, makes me wonder of this wasn't a ploy to put AA in a sense of panic? Guess what, their principal, Chancellor, custodians, cafeteria workers, counselors, DC Cap advisors, coaches and parents are AA. So, when would the need for a great white hope be warranted? Many of Eastern students have been accepted and will attend many of the universities that their teacher base attended. The Eastern 2015 graduates were also heavily sort after by HBCU of which those colleges offered full-rides. I do believe the majority of DCPS recognized Top Ten student body that graduated from the various schools are most - likely going to attend HBCU. I do believe Penn, Princeton, Harvard and Yale may have secured one minority each from DCPS. I honestly believe their acceptance was in part due to the community - service rendered. I am told that all of the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship students are AA.

I would tread lightly, be warned, if someone is going to bash the HBCU... I wouldn't do it.
