Yale. And we still can't quite believe it!!! She has worked so hard for the last four years but I know a part of her acceptance was just good luck.

+1 for a Gap year - our DD is probably headed for one as well. More kids could use life experience before heading off to college - short term summer overseas experiences just can't compare.

One of the smartest, nicest guys I knew in HS started at Davidson, found it too parochial, and transferred to Arizona State. He's done great for himself. Some of you are just ridiculously stuck on top-rated schools (and likely brand-name merchandise as well).

ASU is a party school for dumb but rich east coast kids. And a totally different breed from the Arizona kids who attend ASU. Everyone at ASU knows the difference.

PS I think PP's point about not allowing her daughter to apply to ASU was because she was ONLY applying to be with then-boyfriend. A damn good reason not to let your kid apply to any school.

I am not surprised that she is the only one on DCUM taking a Gap Year as she is the only one in her entire class doing it. I hope it isn't a mistake.

Kudos to your daughter. Not a mistake at all. A gap year will expand her worldview and her education. It also shows she can think for herself and is not a lemming.

PS if she was my kid, I would be appalled at her lack of ambition and drive. As it is, if she makes it out of high school without getting pregnant or expelled, I'll consider it a successful year.

BTW DD and her idiot boyfriend broke up last week.

If I were her, I'd still get as far away from you as possible. You sound awful.

NP here and she sounds like a good mother to me. Would you let your 17 year old daughter go to a far lesser university just to be with her high school boyfriend?

Who said she was 17?

The idiot boyfriend at Arizona State might treat her better than some guy who ends up date raping her at Columbia.

Most high school seniors are 17 when they start the application process.

And the idiot boyfriend and the girl have already broken up so I doubt he os treating her anyway at all.

Seriously, PP, how old are you?
