If you are rude and gruff, we might very well put on the redneck show you're looking for just to entertain ourselves.
+1 Many people don't realize it but its true with many cultures - if you project an attitude based on stereotypes toward people they (GASP!!) will not smile and shake your hand and go out of their way to disprove your prejudiced assumptions they're going to frown and be unfriendly and treat you like the idiot you are.
Been to West Virginia countless times, had a wonderful time. I probably would not lug around my Louis Vuitton, but thats called human decency, not flaunting material wealth when others are going through a hard time.
It's interesting that West Virginia has some of the highest poverty rates in the country and some of the lowest crime rates. Some of the best people live there. Truly salt of the earth, wonderful individuals.
NP. I'm wondering about this. Can anyone explain? It has been drilled into me that crime is a direct result of poverty and lack of opportunity. I'm honestly curious - no race baiting, please.

Since when is being on the dole "salt of the earth"? I consider people who find ways to work for a living and have some integrity as "salt of the earth". I'm sure there are some of them in WV, but if 75% of them are on the dole in some way, I wouldn't consider most of them "salt of the earth".
According to the Cambridge dictionary:
"If you say that someone is the salt of the earth, you mean that they are a very good and honest person."
Stated directly after mentioning the incredibly low crime rate, I should think it would be obvious to anyone with even the most tenuous grasp of the English language how it applies.
how "good" are they if they aren't willing to figure out how to earn an honest living.

No, it's not a joke. It's the sad reality for many towns across the U.S. who have lost their industry.
Why don't these unemployed people move to where there are farm jobs? I'm totally serious. It pays about $10/hr. NC has been asking for unemployed American citizens to work their farms, but only something like 2 or 3 ever show up to work.
I bet most of their ancestors moved to find jobs, clear across the Atlantic ocean. Why can't they move a few states away for jobs? Isn't it better than being on the dole? The kids can get a better education, and then do better for themselves when they are older.
Lots of immigrants today do this, too, and most don't even speak English.
