I did read the emails, and I saw how his PR team and lawyers redacted his comments and included the full text of the nutty communications from Ellie and her mom. In addition, they hand-picked which communications to make public, recognizing that this type of case gets tried in the court of public opinion and that he has a narrow window to shape the public perceptions of the relationship and the merits of the lawsuit.

That's what good lawyers and PR people do. He has them, and she doesn't.

So they likely drafted a complaint and hoped to extract a big settlement. Lonsdale then probably said no, so they went ahead and filed thinking she'd be viewed as a sympathetic victim. Bad news was that, after the phony UVA story, reporters are more likely to be skeptical of claims like hers (yep, thanks Jackie) and Lonsdale, like a good gazillionaire with a CYA mentality, kept a treasure trove of past correspondence from Ellie and her mom that are largely inconsistent with the allegations.

Net result is he looks like a horny frat-boy with a case of arrested development who was more than happy to hit on younger women, she looks like another damaged young woman with serious mental problems making false accusations, the mom looks like a caricature of an overly ambitious, money-grubbing helicopter mom, and the dad is completely AWOL. He moves on, and they become objects of derision. Not a very good outcome, considering they are smart and privileged and didn't need his money to be successful.

I don't believe her either. Not saying he's a saint but I do not believe she's such a victim as she made herself sounded after being with him for nearly 2 years. Also, I'm very suspicious of the level of involvement in their relationship from her mother. It sounded really weird to me. It's also odd that the article did not mention her father's objection/opinions in all this--only the mother. I know that my DH would not sit so quietly by if he thinks our DD is being taken advantage of or is in a relationship where she's a victim to abuse.

Did anyone else catch in her complaint that he'd sometimes have sex (rape?) her 10 times a day? Wow! When now-DH and I were vacationing together early in our relationship, the most he could do was 5 times a day. Even then, he'd get a blister on his penis that made things, well, challenging. I'm impressed with Joe.

Had he done so, you would expect to have seen that allegation included in her complaint. It wasn't. But I sense that, in some fundamental way, this is about the mother believing that, for the first time in her life, her perfect daughter had "lost" at something, and that someone else needed to be held accountable because the daughter was always supposed to get what the mother thought she deserved.

He counter sued for defamation. Lots of dirt already out there. Settlement will depend on who has more in the closet that they don't want to come out
