The VW jetta is a safe and reliable car, at least compared with any mercedes (reliability). It will cost more to maintain than a honda civic, but it is 1) safer, and 2) nicer.

If you actually look at a VW, you will find that they are basically Audi's at a more reasonable price. I drive a GTI, which is mechanically an Audi A3 (or close).

Based on this thread, I can see why. Your input seems to be fairly poorly thought out. At the beginning you didn't want him buying a new car at all, now you're trying to jack up the budget to what you find impressive?
