Those aren't good either, but tater tots have their own very weird,, very unpleasant aftertaste. Yuck. Luckily the world of one-dish meals is much bigger than tater tots.
If you don't like the seasoning on tater tots you could substitute in fresh sliced, diced, or grated potatoes and season to taste.

+1 It's the unbrowned ground meat that really kills me...
Think of it like meatloaf. I bet you like meatloaf.
Meatloaf is usually seasoned. This is seasoned with just a "pinch" of salt and pepper. I like a good trashy casserole as much as the next guy, but that one sounds absolutely vile.
So it really isn't the unbrowned that kills you it's just the seasoning? If so, go ahead and add some egg, onions, and bread crumbs, to the hamburger first.
