Yes to your question. I wouldn't call the rest of America "homogenous and insufferable" but for sure, they are not as great for people of color as DC is. My husband and I are both from cities in the South (both cities have been talked about very favorably in this thread) but neither of us would move back and raise our kids where we grew up. DC has a long history and solid community of UMC African Americans, and it's nice not to be the only ones.

You and virtually everyone else in this area it seems, judging from this board.

I'm from NC and would def consider moving to Durham (not sure about the schools though). Charlotte is nice but kinda lacks a soul - although that may be changing. The city has a lot to offer and you're easy driving distance to beaches and the mountains which is one of the best things about NC in general. Have also lived in Denver and would go back in a heartbeat. It's so beautiful and people are nice and seem to really appreciate the outdoors. Nice eye candy for any single ladies too. But the place I'd really love to move to is Charlottesville.

I grew up in the Nova suburbs and stayed until late 20s. Grad school took me to Chicago and I fell in love with this city. DC is minor leagues compared to it. Culture, food, music, sports, you name it is all better in Chicago. Hell I'd argue the weather here is better. Y'all are dealing with a snowstorm now while it's sunny here. The summers here are legendary which they're oppressive in DC. Also, the joke here is that Chicago is perfectly position for global warming ?
There are still some of the type A competitive folks here but it's not the majority. I work at a Chicago based company and it's DC pay without the DC stress.

COL is lower, though the state has a financial mess on it's hands.
