It’s the orchid/weed theory of human development. Some people are born with more resilient brains.

Really? Thank you for responding. Ugh. It's the reverse of being a helicopter parent.
I must be naive and sheltered because if the government took my kids I would work night and day to get them back. Not only because the pain would be unbearable but because the instability of foster care can't be good even if certain foster parents are good. Complete adoption is different to me and several friends have adopted and those kids are leading a life with continuity and predictability.
If had an addiction or other illness that took up all my time so I couldn't parent or provide at a minimal level then maybe ? but Shamika's mom hasn't shown that in the podcast yet. I am far from a perfect parent but no one is going to love and care about my kids the way I do as their mom.

Maybe she did threaten to report and this situation was enough that he killed her, himself & Relisha? Child molesters don't do well in jail. There has been speculation that the sex traders killed them both but Tatum was seen purchasing the bags and other tools to potentially hide Relisha's body.
I never understood how the mother wasn't charged with something.Everyone wanted to blame the school but she lied for weeks at a time, set in fake drs notes etc and sold her kid to the janitor.

I heard one of the social workers who had checked in on Banita Jacks at some point testify about her experience years ago. There was no way anyone with her caseload could have kept up. I’m sure it’s even worse now with the pandemic. So many kids not showing up to “school.” Kids with transient housing; moving in with relatives in other states; etc. I can’t imagine trying to keep up with it all.

I really don’t think there are strict attendance protocols at all. Parents can easily come up with excuses for absences that are accepted, lots of kids referred to CFSA with not much to show, etc. I would be angered and saddened if something like this happens to another child in DC, but not surprised.
