signed,

70k employee who works in a place where the hottest perk is the "holiday party potluck" in our office conference room.

Chin up, maybe someday you'll get a nice Costco cheese platter in the conference room, like we do! (also 70K)

I have a friend who makes about 160K and relies on his yearly 20K bonus. I don't get bonuses, if you rely on them isn't that just like a salary?

You don't count as normal middle class, FYI.

It depends on where you live and mortgage costs.

no it doesn't. if you live in a rich area, even for DC metro, with $1.2MM homes, then you are choosing to have that mtg cost and you are not middle class.

I have a middle class lifestyle because I have a $950K house on a 15 year mtg. Thus no money left over for cars, trips, etc. But that is by choice.

Fed here and I've never received a bonus, nor worked at an agency that handed them out.

Sometimes there are rewards handed out (midyear) for some stellar act of service, but they typically don't go above 2k.
