Wow. As a Chevy Chase native and Landon alum I'm fascinated by this thread.

Granted, my experience is a little out of date, but I played hockey for 10 years on a team with players from Landon, Prep, STA, Sidwell and other schools. We saw each other at parties and other DC events.

One of my best friends growing up was on my hockey team and went to Bullis. We hung out together frequently. Two other good friends went to St. Andrews.

I played tennis and was coached outside of Landon, so I practiced with players from schools all over the DC area, including from Prep, STA and other private and public schools, and saw many of those players at tournaments, parties and other DC events.

Neighbors across the street went to Prep. As with my other activities, I saw them at DC events and at parties.

During my high school years I dated girls from Holton, Stone Ridge, Churchill and Washington Lee, so I saw people at a lot of different parties.

When I went to college and met someone who went to any of the other DC private schools, we had a shared experience and generally knew people in common.

Every one of the schools in the DC area is different and has strengths and weaknesses. Every one of them can claim successful alumni, and has some they'd rather not claim.

There were aspects of my experience at Landon that were fantastic, and it prepared me very well for college and life. There were aspects of life at Landon that were not so great, but they also prepared me for college and life. I had great teachers and had some great experiences. I dealt with some bullies and learned a lot about life. From hearing from many of my peers from other schools, our experiences were similar.

If having a religious component to your son's education is important, Landon is not going to provide it. That just means you have to get that outside of school.

If you people are treating each other like members of different gangs based on where your children are going to school, that's your own baggage, not your kids'.

Essentially correct. You could also add the St. John's crowd from the 1960's and 1970's.

Although "remaining connected to these schools and their fellow alumni" might replace "reliving the glory days".

I don't know if these people "look down" on Catholics that send their boys to Landon or other non-Catholic alternatives as much they feel that those who do are no longer interested in being part of the larger group. Landon does seem to raise their hackles most.

The only people who care sooo much where you went to high school in this area are Prep and Gonzaga parents who have lived in this area their entire life. They never left DC, they love reliving the glory days, and worst of all look down upon any Catholic family who sends their boy to a non Catholic institution, particularly Landon.

I am from Philly originally also. And Philadelphia, in my experience, has its share of "narrow minded thinking". But it doesn't compare with what we have seen here in DC.

This is a different place. Far fewer are natives of the area. And DC is a "credentials-oriented' world. Hence the over-the-top concern over where one goes to school.

If almost all Philly Catholics were or Irish extraction and lived in close geographic proximity to one another, you might find a lot more unanimity of thought there.

Interesting question -- at Gonzaga they cannot fit the entire school in St Aloyisius, so as a community, they only come together 1-2 x per semester. Prep celebrates Mass much more often, maybe 1-2 x per month. I know a number of boys who also go to mass on the weekends with the boarders - all of whom are requird to attend Mass every weekend in coat and tie.

The term "liberal" is going to confuse a lot of people. The Jesuits are still in the Catholic Church. In fact, A Jesuit was just made Pope. The Berrigan brothers are long since gone. The alumni, parents and students are definitely COnservative.

There may be a few more non-Catholics at GP but that is driven by the boarders, who are frequently from Asia, and the few minority students added for the purpose of "diversity".

GP remains what it has always been. A Catholic school that serves the Catholics in NW DC and Montgomery County. The student body celebrates mass together regularly and the Jesuit priests serve the Mass.

Love the historical context. Not sure that its even remotely related to the topic, however. As a side note, don't think GP is nearly as "Catholic" as Gonzaga; and both schools tend to be on the liberal side as they're both Jesuit.
