While this is a largely anonymous site with a great deal of leeway granted to posters, please refrain from f-bombs and c-words. Rather than spending your 4th blowing up this thread, might I suggest that you blow up some fireworks as I intend to do? That would be much appreciated.

If you were to give these DU idiots $1000 every day, they'd squander it on foolish things and at the end of the day couldn't tell you where it all went. This is why most of them live from hand-to-mouth and are constantly complaining about others having too much. They are the embodiment of the moochers in life and they want your $375K to be confiscated from you and given to them so they can continue to be slackers while doing nothing but complaining.
Ignore what they have to say, laugh at their stupidity and the misfortune they've brought upon themselves, and be thankful they don't live in your neighborhood.

If you CHOOSE to spend the majority of your money on housing, then don't act surprise when the money is gone. You spent it! That was your choice.
For most, money is not an unlimited resource. So choose how you spend it, but stop whining about it.

I'm not seeing anyone saying that's the issue. They live where they live and they're having problems budgeting with their current income. I'm not seeing how being critical of them for discussing what they must contend with and saying "Oh, you poor dears" is accomplishing anything.
What we have here (especially from a website who attracts perpetual losers and complainers that found their way over to this site via a link from that site) are a bunch of individuals making comments who are not qualified to lend their opinion on any topic, much less one concerning finances.

In fact, crying about this in a public forum is rather offensive. Hire a damned financial adviser.
No one is saying they can't make it. OP's question is how do other families in similar situations do it. I gave our budget as an example. As you can see, we are making it. However, we don't live a luxurious life. We have to budget vacations, major repairs, and summer camps.

That's the point! A $350K house in certain parts of DC isn't "decent" so they have to live elsewhere. OK, you get it? What good is making a million dollars a year if gas prices are $10,000 a gallon? It's all relative.

Quit being such snooty snobs having to own such outragous things. Try back tracking to where i am and live off that budget with a 2yo. I'd be insanely grateful to get an extra $200 a month. None the less14k bring home. This is insane.
Where do you live my sweet dear
Unfortunately in the hell hole of Indiana.
In indiana you can buy a home for 15k so it is all relative. In the dc area that home would be over 350k
