They didnt with me. I was a 13-3 and went down to an 11. The paycut sucked but ultimately, it was worth it for the flexibility and lifestyle. I recently heard that they matched a friend who was a 12. Maybe I wasnt a great negotiator back then.

SAME - did 11 and 12 over again

I found that if you stay in Biglaw, you need to be 60% to get any kind of sanity. 80% is a full time job with unpredictable hours. 60% is closer to 25-30 billables a week with unpredictable hours. 3 months back is really hard because you still don't have sleep. Couple that with a busy month and it can feel unbearable.

60% can take you off the "track" sometimes but found it hasn't hurt my career yet. If I wasn't 60%, I couldn't do it. My husband also scaled back so would be home some days and we could cut daycare to 3 days and now we focus on trying to be home when school gets out most days.

Also you need to outsource as much as possible. Have extra daycare so you get a break. Have someone else clean the house. Get pre-made healthy food or easy meals on the weekends so dinner isn't a drag. Buy things online and have them delivered, diapers.com, amazon, clothes.

Let's see advising on complex and interesting issues or changing more diapers?! But I will say that it gets easier. I left a firm for government because I had no future there and the people were assholes, but the government is an easier schedule.

It will get easier with your child. My daughter is almost two and things are so so so much better. She is more fun to be around as well. We have a nanny, but I can see that she will soon be better off in daycare around other kids. I wouldn't want to start a daycare because let's face it your child will eventually go to school and frankly I wouldn't leave my kid with some randomn former attorney who wants to stay at home but get paid.

So your kid is now "more fun to be around"?
You're a mother?

I'm actually quite interested in that area of law and have some limited experience in it (representing veterans pro bono, not the VA). Should I just keep checking USA jobs to see when the jobs become available?

No. send resume, writing sample, & proof of bar membership to bvajobs@va.gov for an associate counsel position by may 17

How can you hope to land this job if you can't figure out how to apply for it? Seriously?

Not the poster that you are snarking at, however, I have an answer for you. She can hope to get the job b/c she IS figuring out how to apply for it. She is seeking out the advice of other lawyers on this thread. She is asking the lawyers here for information, advice and guidance. SHE is doing the smart/correct thing. The folks giving her advice are also doing the right thing by giving her constructive helpful advice. YOU are the only one not doing the right thing b/c you are just being nasty and unhelpful. What you are seeing on this thread is how women can help other women. What you are doing is a great example of how SOME women don't want to help other women.

+1

Determining how to apply for a particular government job may be the poorest IQ test in the world.

It was a fair question. The job wasnt listed on USAJobs, so there would have been no way to know how to apply.

The children are all in school full time, thanks.
