I also do not want to sound condescending, but I must echo the comment that in terms of getting into the "right school" it really does not matter that much...choose a school that is right for your family. Our first child went to a school that is much raved about on this site with all the bells and whistles and our second is curretnly going to a pretty new school in our neighborhood where we were close to friends and can walk to school...each child is excelling...we chose montessori because it fits with our philosphy of edcuation, but I really think the "right" school is one that fits your child and your family whether it is the "it" school or just feels right...if it works for your family, then your child will be condifent, happy, and do just fine whether it is the "it" school or not...and in terms of who gets in where it is true that it is self selecting, parents who want sidwell tend to congregate in the same schools and siblings get in....look at how well a school is run and whether it is good for your family, don't worry about the rest

Sorry - did not mean to sound condescending, I swear. Just trying to be a bit light about it and guess it came across as pompous. From having crossed to the "other side" of the preschool debate, I just can now finally see more clearly and I just wanted to say that getting your child into what someone else says is a "top ten preschool" really is not something to get too worried about. I do not see any long lasting effects from preschool on 1st, 2nd, 3rd graders.

There are so many pre-schools in the area that would give your child excellent preparation for K, and where he would likely be very happy. I would put convenience to your home or workplace as a primary consideration as well. Commuting time (and associated stress) around here is not to be under-estimated.

My DH didn't go to school until first grade, and did not know English (here in this city). Got himself a full ride to an Ivy League, is the smartest guy I know, and most importantly, friendly, caring and compassionate. Unless they beat the kids and let them watch tv for 12 hours while eating ho-ho's, none of this pre-k shit matters.

In my children's well-regarded DC private they each have children in their class who went to (to name a few) NCRC, St John's, CCBC, Mt Sinai, St Columba's, many of the Montessoris, Metropolitan, somewhere in another state, and no preschool at all. You would never be able to identify the child with the preschool or even with the lack of preschool by 1st or 2nd grade. St. John's sent a few to Sidwell from Tucker this year. Not sure how many from Rainey.
