I think he was ego hungry and had a 40 year old hanging on his every word and thinking he was so great at his disposable. Especially while over in Afghanistan/Irag/wherever. I'm sure there was some downtime! It was a matter of being an ego boost and an easy situation that presented itself.
Now the question will be if he has wrecked his marriage or if his wife of 38 years will find it in her heart to stay with him.
The looks of the other woman usually doesn't matter, its the ego boost and the fact that they can.

Let me add a different perspective. I had an affair with a two star general, not saying which service. Our age difference is 15 years. Neither of us had any intention of leaving our spouses for the other. Extramarital relationships are natural.

It's not her fault. It's reason one million why getting married at age 22 is very bad in this day of long life expectancies. I got married at 31 and can't imagine being married to him for 50 years. The Petraeus' have been married 38 years already and they're only 60!!! Ugh.

Every single one of the "Frumps" posted above me still look more put together and more youthful than Holly Petraeus. She's not just frumpy, she's matronly. Of course a man was going to find it hard to resist a younger, fitter woman. Naturally, it speaks to Petraeus' character he could NOT resist the younger woman, but ALL men whose wives looked like Holly P would be tempted. Be real with yourselves. They might have too much honor to stray, but they WOULD be tempted if an actual chance to act popped up.

And here's our current Surgeon General, Regina Benjamin, who is clearly an anorexic marathon runner:

It's sad that it has to be this way, but Holly does remind me of the frumpy midwestern woman. It's accepted there, but unfortunately not in any position of authority out here in the power centers of the country. It's just unexpected.

I agree, it's not the weight, it's the attitude. Frumpy in DC says "I don't care".

Hey, it's the "frumpy says I don't care" poster!

Yeah, frumpy never says "I have way too much going on to spend every other moment of my life worrying about my fuckability."

As soon as I saw a photo of Ms. Petraeus I knew exactly what the DCUM chorus of bitter, starving women would say.

Y'all as reliable as the sunrise.

My husband was pleased when I gained weight and your husbands regularly hit on my fat ass. Do you know how many "thin, fit" men want to feel something sweet and lush in bed? Many.

gee, this is nice. blame the wife for her husband's behavior. leave her alone, this is none of your business.
