I think he was ego hungry and had a 40 year old hanging on his every word and thinking he was so great at his disposable. Especially while over in Afghanistan/Irag/wherever. I'm sure there was some downtime! It was a matter of being an ego boost and an easy situation that presented itself.
Now the question will be if he has wrecked his marriage or if his wife of 38 years will find it in her heart to stay with him.
The looks of the other woman usually doesn't matter, its the ego boost and the fact that they can.
